Biochar Assessment
The Edinburgh Toolkit is a suite of combinable methods designed for comprehensive assessment of biochar from the perspective of soil function. The tests offer comparison of alternate biochar products in terms of their utility in two areas - agronomy and carbon balance.
The toolkit takes the form of five different assays that target the lability and stability of biochar fractions, the effect of biochar additions on pre-existing soil carbon (priming) and the agronomic benefits that relate to (a) the nutrient value of biochar over contrasting timescales and (b) the impact of biochar on soil structural properties.
