My PhD project was titled 'Evaluating the impacts of biochar on the fate and dynamics of organic amendments in agricultural soil'. It focused on understanding, demonstrating and monitoring the effects of biochar on trace gas emissions and nutrient dynamics in soils amended with manure or slurry.

My University of Edinburgh supervisors were Saran Sohi and Dave Reay. Work on the effects of biochar on slurry storage and in the field environment also involved collaboration with North Wyke (Rothamsted Research) and UC Davis (California).

My thesis was submitted in November 2012 and I graduate in July (2013). Four of the thesis chapters have been submitted for journal publication, with two already published. Back in the USA, I am seeking to continue in the biochar and/or sustainability field, drawing on experience in both scientific research and intellectual property.
